Ideal HTML5 Video File Size

Some HTML5 video users contacted us through email wondering what would be an ideal file size or size range. It is hard to say which file size is the best for online video streaming, as it depends on your internet connection speed. It is advisable to keep your HTML5 video file sizes as small as possible.

However to get a small video file size with good quality is not easy to do. Normally best video quality comes with largest video file size, better video quality comes with medium file size, if you want to get slim videos, you have to lose some video quality.

How to know if my HTML5 video is not too big for online display?

The most straightforward method to make sure your HTML5 video file size is reasonable or not, if to post it to your server and try to load it on your web browser.

Except that, you can actually do a little math in advance. For example, if your internet connection speed is 2M/s, which is quite normal for broadband connection nowadays, and your video length is 5 minutes, video file size is 50M, then your HTML5 video size should load and play smoothly. However if you are doing other things while viewing on an online video, for example downloading other files, data, playing web games, it is another story.

Note that it doesn’t always matter what size of the video file, because your video length, file size and internet connection decide whether you can play the online video smoothly or not. Bear in mind the video buffers while it is playing.

How to get smaller HTML5 video Size?

A large video file is more likely to encounter buffering issues and drive the viewer crazy. The smaller your HTML5 video file size, the easier it will stream.

One of the most important settings of every web video is its width and height, also known as video dimensions. If you have a high definition video and want to convert it to HTML5 video and publish to your website, you may need to crop or resize the video to a smaller dimension. For example, if you want to convert an iPhone recorded video to HTML5 video, which is 1920p*1080p, you may consider to scale the dimension to 640p*360P, as you do not really need a web video that big.

To scale your HTML5 video with HTML5 Video Player is quite easy. To do so you can follow below steps.

Change HTML5 Video Weight Height (Dimesions)

  • Run HTML5 Video Player on your Mac or Windows PC.
  • Click the Theme tab, right under the theme list, you will find a Video Size option
  • Click to expand the presets and choose the one suits your need. If you do not find any preset width/height you want, you can click the gear icon to manually type in your target video dimensions by pixels.

Another very important thing can greatly affect your HTML5 video size is the bitrate. If your original video file is huge.  To put it on the web you first need to compress it. Any video conversion software will reduce the video bitrate in order to get compressed lightweight videos for playback on websites.

The bitrate is simply a measure of how much data or information goes into your video file. The higher the bitrate, the more space the file will take up.  Let’s take the YouTube video for instance, the normal YouTube video will be with a bitrate as 250 kbps, it takes up around 2M per minute. It is 500 kbps bitrate and around 4 M file size for a one minute YouTube HD video.

To change or reduce your HTML5 video bit rate with HTML5 Video Player is quite easy. To do so you can follow below steps.

Change HTML5 Video Bitrate

  • Run HTML5 Video Player on your Mac or Windows PC.
  • Click the Theme tab, right under the theme list, you will find a Video Size option with a gear icon right beside it. You can click the gear icon to manually type in your target video bit-rate by kbps.

Please download the latest V1.2 for Mac. If you are on an earlier version, you can’t change video bit-rate.
